Glenn Nye Praises Supreme Court's Ruling

There has been plenty of discussion in the blogosphere about today's decision by the Supreme Court regarding DC's ban on handguns. The ruling essentially stated that the right to bear arms was an individual right and that the ban was therefore unconstitutional. While there are many Democratic activists who are rather dissapointed with the decision, I think it speaks to the big tent idea of the part when you consider that some of it's members are actively supporting the decision. In an email statement earlier today, for instance, Democratic Congressional candidate Glenn Nye praised the ruling.
“The Second Amendment guarantees our right to bear arms and today, in a decision that was crucially important to the people of Virginia and all Americans, the Supreme Court affirmed that right. I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, and in Congress I will make sure the rights of responsible gun owners are protected.”
In the portion of Virginia that Glenn Nye is running, I think this move could prove to be beneficial. Not only will his statement be appealing to the outdoorsmen who make up some of his potential supporters, but I think it also goes to show his independence from some of the traditional movers and shakers in the Democratic Party. In a time when independent thinking is definitely something we need in both parties, this could prove to be appealing to moderate Republicans and Independents as well as those who generally stay home on election day.
